Tenerife

Tenerife is not only the largest of the Canary Islands, but also the most popular and diverse. The capital is Santa Cruz and is located in the northeast. The former capital La Laguna is the second largest city on the island, a university town and is located west of Santa Cruz.

Tenerife has a lot to offer. Hikers, water sports enthusiasts, mountain bikers , bathers, active vacationers - there is something for every taste. This island is one of my favorites among the Canaries. The landscape is very diverse, the south is rather barren and the north quite green. Many sights are located in the north and hikers have more options here. In the south, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje are the most popular tourist areas. The approx. 10 km long promenade from Los Cristianos runs to Costa Adeje. For night owls there is more choice of clubs and bars in the south.

With a rental car you can explore the island on your own. The rental and gasoline prices are quite cheap. From the north of Puerto de La Cruz to Costa Adeje, the drive takes about an hour via the TF-1 and TF-5 motorways. However, there is a lot of traffic on Tenerife and it can take longer to find a parking space.

The symbol of Tenerife is undoubtedly the Pico del Teide, at 3715 meters the highest mountain in Spain. A trip to the Teide National Park is highly recommended. Here you can take the Teide cable car up to an altitude of 3555 meters.

Many German emigrants live in La Paz, a quiet district of Puerto de La Cruz. This place was my home for a while. Celebrating New Year's Eve in Puerto de La Cruz is also something very special. Music is playing everywhere, people are dancing in the street and it is pleasantly warm. There are also some clubs nearby to keep partying on. If you still want to eat outside in the evening, a table should be reserved in advance, as all the restaurants are very full. Prices are significantly overpriced on New Year's Eve. The best thing to do is to eat comfortably at home and later simply enjoy the atmosphere in the Plaza del Charco. The fireworks are more modest than in Germany. However, I liked that very much. You can also celebrate Christmas in a relaxed manner here. Many German vacationers spend the holidays in the Canary Islands to escape the Christmas stress.

Caution: Unfortunately, robberies often occur in Tenerife. Never leave valuables in the car or on the beach unattended!
